Learner Outcome
1. Identify and adopt strategies and practices that enhance patient outcomes and the patient experience.
Description: The performance of joint arthroplasty in an outpatient setting is expected to rise significantly over the coming decade, with predictions that greater than half of all primary joint arthroplasties will be performed in an outpatient setting by the year 2026. The trend continues toward utilizing ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) to perform outpatient arthroplasty procedures in addition to other orthopaedic outpatient procedures. As the transition from a traditional hospital model continues, challenges exist in the efforts to protect patients' overall care and safety. Differences between hospital and ASC models place staffing, financial, and time pressure on the interprofessional team; adequately preparing patients involves medical optimization, setting patient and family expectations, identifying appropriate caregivers, and establishing effective protocols to deal with predictable discharge delays that include blood pressure, oversedation, postoperative urinary retention, postoperative nausea and/or vomiting, pain, and social issues. The presenters will share unique situations encountered in their development of an ASC, related to patient selection criteria and also staffing. They will describe their efforts and successes implementing a Team Based Care Model for their Orthopaedic Surgery Clinic.
Education Outcome:At least 50% of participants will report that the session provided information that would cause change(s) in the clinical setting and/or professional environment
