Description:Prior to 1970, all surgeries were performed in hospitals and were associated with long lengths of stay and high costs. Improved surgical techniques, along with the desire to reduce the costs of simple surgeries in hospitals, have led to the development of alternative settings, such as outpatient or ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). Several surgical cases once considered to be inpatient-only have migrated to ASCs, with well-documented high rates of patient satisfaction, good outcomes, and cost savings.
Currently, outpatient total knee replacements and total hip replacements are expected to increase by 457 percent and 633 percent, respectively, in the next decade. Healthcare analytics predict that only 3 percent of the next decade’s growth in total joint replacement surgery will take place in inpatient settings. Cost benefits have become noticeable. The result is an annual cost savings to Medicare and its beneficiaries of $2.6 billion. In addition, a review of commercial claims found that ASCs reduce U.S. healthcare costs by $38 billion each year.
For these obvious reasons, patients, providers, employers, insurers and many other stakeholders are very interested in finding ways to safely migrate procedures to ASCs. If only it were as easy as it sounds. Pioneers into the ASC field initially found challenges on many fronts. Over time, many have been addressed, with a continued movement to transition from the hospital setting to the ASC or a similar model. In this webinar, the presenters will share their journey and transition that ultimately resulted in a Premier Center of Excellence designation for the Oregon Surgical Institute.

To gain the continuing professional development contact hours offered for this webinar, the participant must view the entire webinar, complete an online post-test, and online evaluation. Only after these requirements are completed will a certificate will be issued.
